Samarium Cobalt Block & Bar Magnets

Samarium Cobalt block & bar magnets are strong permanent magnets that offer excellent magnetic stability in high or very low temperature environments. Part of the rare earth magnet family, SmCo block magnets have superior magnetic properties compared to other permanent magnet materials because of their high-resistance to corrosion or demagnetization. From medical devices to high-performance motors and sensor systems, samarium cobalt magnets are ideal for technical applications where magnetic stability is critical in extreme temperatures and space is a limiting factor.

Standard Dimensional Tolerances for SmCo Bar & Block Magnets

Here are the standard tolerances for Rare Earth Magnets (SmCo & NdFeB) based on the following dimensions:

  • +/- 0.004” on length & width dimensions ranging from 0.040” to 1.000”.
  • +/- 0.008” on length & width dimensions ranging from 1.001” to 2.000”.
  • +/- 0.012” on length & width dimensions ranging from 2.001” to 3.000”.

*Tolerance on thickness is +/-0.004” regardless of size.

Approximate Pull Info for SmCo Magnets

The approximate pull info listed for SmCo disc magnets are for reference only. These values are calculated under the assumption that the magnet will be attached to a flat, ground 1/2" thick mild steel plate. coatings, rust, rough surfaces, and certain environmental conditions can significantly reduce the pull force. Please be sure to test the actual pull in your actual application. For critical applications, it is suggested that the pull be de-rated by a factor of 2 or more, depending on the severity of a potential failure.

Safety Precautions for Samarium Cobalt Magnets

SmCo magnets are hard, very brittle and high in magnetic strength. They can also snap together with great force, and chip or break if dropped. Therefore, they require careful handling and packing in order to prevent injuries or damages to the magnets.
